Rochas was born on September 22, 1962, into a humble home there in Imo State, in the Eastern part of Nigeria. He is from Ogboko in Ideato South Local Government and watching his emergence into the world as a tiny baby then, it is obvious that not many people around that witnessed his arrival would have predicted how big and influential he would eventually grow to become in Nigeria.
At childhood, his parents were very poor, and they have no choice but to struggle for their survival. Rochas was said to have joined in the struggle at a tender age too, in the attempt to support himself and the family. It was made known that he hawks goods in Jos (in a Northern State in Nigeria) for some time too. Nevertheless, after some time, he rose to the position of a proprietor in a commercial school through determination and hard work.
Senator Rochas Okorocha Education
Despite the toughness that surrounds his childhood, he still resolves to get educated, and he committed himself to ensure he goes beyond primary school education. And so, Rochas was able to find himself in secondary school In 1976 (which shaped his future to a good extent).
He found his way into public service after some time, but yet, he ensured he keeps amassing more education in the academic line. So, he was basically combining work with academics. His resolve has become an inspiration today, and we can confidently tell young people not to allow the situation that surrounds their birth have a negative impact on what they ought to become in life; and that they should ensure they do all that can be done to amass a reasonable amount of education.
Today, Rochas can boast of having several academic certificates which he worked hard for – including LLL.B and LL.M from the University of Jos.
In 1996, with the interest of giving back to the society that made him what he currently is, Rochas Okorocha decided to establish a vehicle through which he can touch more lives (particularly those who don’t have much financial strength in the society), and the result was the Rochas Foundation – which has grown to become one of the most known in the country.
The Foundation is a philanthropy organization that has been in operation for some time now. In fact, by the year 2001, he brought about the Rochas Foundation College. Today, it too has been spread across different parts of the country.
Through this medium, Rochas offers free education to Nigerian students whose parents can’t afford paying for their education. This is understandable quite alright since Rochas himself grew in a poor family where he had to struggle vehemently to get educated (and as he has seen the benefits attached to academic education, which helped him vehemently in his career). And so, the foundation was brought up due to his interest in seeing that those who can’t afford education can still be there and won’t be shortchanged.
Okorocha is a nice humanitarian who has also been made the President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society. Before he emerged as the President of the organization, there was a state it was, and upon his emergence, he was able to move it to a new position.
Being a man who desires to have more influence that will enable him to touch more lives (a stronger platform with bigger reach and influence), he chose to join politics, and he began participating at both State and national levels. He also started politics from what might be described as a humble position, in the year 1999. Rochas was representing Ideato South and North Federal Constituency as the Federal Commissioner representing his region in the Federal Character Commission.
Rochas Political Journey
He joined the Peoples’ Democratic Party (which was the country’s ruling party as at then) and was also elected chairman of the Youth wing of the party.
As if that is not enough, being a man filled with plenty ambitions, he chose to run for the office of Imo State Governor in 1999 (he has, at this point, accumulated a lot of popularity and admirers), but he, unfortunately, was blocked by some powers that be. He left PDP and joined the All Nigerians Peoples Party to try his luck to become President of the country in 2003. He was a very ‘stubborn’ competition during the elections and, even though he couldn’t win, he was still invited by the presidency to become the special adviser to the president on inter-party affairs.
Okorocha, being a man filled with various ideas, also went ahead to create a political party which he called Action Alliance. One thing that became obvious is how he became tired of the old systems holding back the country’s progress, and how he is keen on ensuring the addition of new stocks that can ensure the growth of the country.
By the year 2007, the Imo-born politician has done a lot of works to get himself rooted in the political landscape of the country and has now built a very strong fan base for himself. He moved back to PDP and still made attempts to contest once more for the position of the President of the country. Unfortunately, he couldn’t go beyond the primaries, as he was won by the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua (who eventually won the general election to become the country’s next president). Nevertheless, it is impressive to note that he proved, at the primaries, that he is building his political career hugely, as he is the one who came second ahead of several others with the same interest.
He was not happy with the party and the way things are being done. Therefore, he once again chose to dump the party and join the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) – a very popular party in the Eastern part of the country.
He chose to participate in the 2011 election for the office of the Governor, and he won APGA’s ticket, which made him one of those that locked horns at the polling booths (alongside competitors from other strong parties). To the surprise of some people, Rochas was able to win the election and he became the Governor of Imo State, sworn into office on May 29, 2011.

After rounding up his first term as Governor of Imo State, Rochas chose to run again for a second term – which he comfortable won. His administration has a lot of critics who believed he doesn’t have what it takes to bring about real transformation. After the end of his second tenure, he ran for a senatorial seat at the National Assembly in Abuja, and he won.
Right now, he remains a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Imo West senatorial zone.
