Musona has always lost hope in playing football because of his small stature which he thought could not fit in to compete with heavily built players. He played cricket when other children went to play football because he didn’t have a boot. He got his first pair of boots from a club owner at the age of 14, and this was how his journey into the world of soccer started. He once played for Haka, his brother’s team before he was picked by the Aces Youth Soccer Academy. During the 2009-2010 football seasons, Musona was taken to Naturena by the Kaizer Chiefs scouts and he earned the Rookie Player of the Year award. In the 2009-2010 football seasons, he played as a substitute but he still scored quite a number of crucial goals. Musona scored 15 goals in 28 league games during the 2010-2011 football seasons, and this turned out to be his breakthrough. The goals were meant for him to win the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot and the achievement attracted the European clubs to him. The clubs include: the German Bundesliga side, 1899 Hoffenheim, the Scottish heavyweights Celtic, and the Serbian giants Partizan.
Musona signed the five-year contract for R19.5 million on the 28th of July, 2011 with the 1899 Hoffenheim. Musona made his debut as a substitute in a match against SC Freiburg. He scored his first goal in a match against DFB Polar in a 2-1 win on the 25th of October, 2011. It was made known on the 18th of May 2012, that Musona would join the Bundesliga side on a loan for one year. He moved back to South Africa from Germany in 2013 to join the Kaizer Chiefs club on a loan, and he scored a total of eight goals in nineteen South African League matches. In a match against the Black Leopards, he scored an important goal which earned the Kaizer Chiefs the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup. He scored a hat trick in the 3-0 win during the first round, and another 4-0 win at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in the next round of competition. On the 29th of March 2014, he had an ankle sprain in a 2-0 win match against the AS Vita Club in the CAF Champions League. He ended that football seasons with 16 recorded goals in all the competitions. Clubs from Belgium, Roda of the Netherlands, and Germany too interest in him. He signed a two-and-half-year contract with the Belgian club in 2014, with effect to be taken in 2015. On the 17th of January 2015, he made a debut in a 7-1 home defeat win.
